Passive reading:

Passive reading is the reading in which the reader does not read with the required concentration and attention. By doing passive reading we are not able to remember what we have read; because passive reading is quantitative in nature, not qualitative.

Active reading:

Active reading is the reading in which the reader does read with the required concentration and attention, by doing active reading we are able to recollect almost what we have read; because active reading is qualitative in nature not quantitative.

Now, we have got to know what type of reading we should adopt. the other which we are looking for is “how to remember what you read” so here are some ways listed that would help you to remember what you read.

1. Read with a good concentration:

when we do not put our whole heart and mind into a respective work then we cannot achieve success in that particular work. According to certain facts humans cannot pay 100% concentration on certain work, so try to pay at least that much attention and concentration on your reading; because concentration allows you to understand the facts of the text that you are reading . Reading with concentration creates a clear picture of facts and figures which comes while reading in your mind and when you have clearly understood the text then you would be easily recalling what you have read.

2. Develop reading as a habit:

when you read out of compulsion, actually you are not reading, you are wasting your time as well as your energy. Putting yourself forcefully to read, would never let your reading be fruitful. Do not do reading as a study, let this reading be developed as your habit. When reading turns into your habit, a kind of interest develops in your mind and heart for reading, and then reading from being habit slowly becomes your hobby. When reading becomes your hobby, then there is no need to force yourself to read, and as a result of which your unsuccessful reading becomes fruitful reading.

3. The material of reading should be of your interest:

When you read something in which you are not interested, then it becomes very difficult for your mind to read with the required concentration and attention and aftermath not able to interpret and understand and thereby not able to remember what you have read.

so, if you really want to remember what you have read then select or choose the appropriate material for reading that is the matter or the text you read should be according to your interest so that you do not get bored while reading.

4. Keep on revising what you have read:

Once in a month you read something then after two to four months you try to recall what you have read, then definitely you will not be able to recall anything. Your mind would be completely blank. It would appear to you as you have never read what you are trying to recall.

so in order to avoid this, you need to revise the text that you have already read. Revising does not mean you should read the same content daily, this would become boring. Set a regular interval to revise what you have read. Revision makes you remember the exact things that you have read. So let’s revision come into your practice.

5. Try to translate the language of Book into your own native language:

sometimes we read books written in different languages. It is not easy to read and understand other than a relative language. Sometimes we adopt the blank reading that is doing the reading without understanding the real meaning of the content that you are reading. And hence when you do not understand the meaning of the text then you cannot make yourself remember that you have read. So try to translate the language of the content that you are reading into a language that you can understand and remember.

6. Try to relate the reading to the practical life:

you are a human and not a machine that you can remember 100% exactly what you have read. You cannot cramp up the whole which you are reading. Now, you would be thinking if we cannot remember the whole what we have read nor we can cramp the whole which we are reading, then what we should do?

The answer is:

we should try to relate whatever the content to our practical life then it would become easy for you to remember what you have read.

7. Make short notes out of your reading:

you have completed reading something and then you put that content aside for months. You do not have any reference refer the content you have read. By not having any reference to would vanish your touch and link with the text that you have already read. You should have a reference that you can refer to, which helps you to recall what you have read. Start making short notes, just pick out some important or key points from the text that you are reading and then write them down so that you can refer afterward.
